Quick checks of your business's fire extinguishers should be done monthly to ensure that they are ready-to-go when needed. Monthly "quick checks" should be conducted on the fire extinguishers and managers or members of the safety committee should be instructed on how to properly conduct these “quick checks”.

A "quick check" should include:

  • Make certain that the extinguisher is mounted in its designated location, is unobstructed, and is available for immediate use.

  • Make certain that the nozzle, hose, extinguisher body, discharge apparatus and mounting bracket are undamaged and in serviceable condition.

  • Check that the extinguisher is fully charged.

  • Check that the safety pin is in place and has a wire security tie holding it.

  • Initial and date the backside of the tag provided by the service company, which conducts the annual inspection of the extinguishers.
